The Vape Takeback & Recycling Setup For UK Vape Retailers
A fixed-scope setup that gives your shop a customer-facing takeback process, staff SOP, returned-vape log, storage checklist and a real collection route — in seven to fourteen days.
- Built around current GOV.UK & OPSS guidance
- Specialist-validated workflow
- UK-wide collection partners
What every UK vape retailer is on the hook for
These aren’t future rules. They are obligations that already apply to your shop under WEEE, the Waste Batteries Regulations and product-safety law. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) and Trading Standards can enforce them. See GOV.UK guidance →
Takeback duty
If you sell vapes, you have to accept used vapes back from customers free of charge — in-store or via a distance equivalent if you sell online.
Customer-facing notice
Customers must be told, clearly and visibly, how and where they can return used vapes. Most shops have nothing in writing.
Storage & segregation
Returned vapes cannot live in your general waste bin. They need a fire-safe container, away from stock, with sensible volume limits.
Records
You should be able to show what was returned, roughly when, and where it went next. A simple log is enough — but it has to exist.
A real recycling route
Returned vapes must go to a licensed waste carrier and an approved treatment facility — not to the back of the van or your domestic bin.
Leftover single-use stock
The disposable vape ban (June 2025) has left a lot of shops sitting on stock that can no longer be sold. It still has to be handled correctly.
Fire risk
Lithium devices stored badly cause fires. Insurers are starting to ask how returned vapes are handled before they’ll renew cover.
Eight deliverables. One folder. Ready for your shop.
Everything below is built specifically for your business on the review call and delivered as a single setup pack you can put straight into use — printed and digital.

Red / amber / green action plan
A prioritised list of what is fine today, what needs fixing soon, and what is urgent.
Built for shops that sell vapes — not the whole supply chain
The setup is right for you if every line below is true. If you’re an importer, own-brand producer, or have an active enforcement case, this is the wrong scope — we’ll say so on the qualification call.
- Independent vape retailers (1 shop)
- Small multi-site vape chains (2–10 shops)
- Online vape sellers shipping in the UK
- UK-supplied stock (not direct importers)
- No active enforcement action against you
- No major battery fire or safety incident in the last 12 months
What this is not
We’d rather you know the boundary before you book. The setup pack is a practical operational toolkit — not a substitute for the items below.
- A formal legal opinion or signed-off compliance certification
- A producer compliance scheme registration on your behalf
- A DGSA (Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser) appointment
- The cost of waste collections (charged separately at a flat all-in price per collection, quoted for your shop)
Five steps. Two weeks. Done.

Compliance Cover, if you want the admin run for you
The setup and flat-price collections stand on their own. If you would rather hand over the ongoing admin too, optional Compliance Cover keeps your shop inspection-ready: Essentials at £29 per site per month, or £299 per site per year (records maintained, consignment note archive, regulatory alerts, incident line and a quarterly compliance statement) or Licence-Ready at £49 per month, or £499 per year, which adds a renewal-ready licence-evidence pack, virtual staff training refreshers with signed logs and digital waste tracking handling. Chain pricing is banded: per-store rates fall as the estate grows, down to £10 per store per month, with the whole account capped at £299 a month on Essentials. Collections stay on the same flat all-in price either way: carrier, consignment note and record-keeping all included.

If yours isn’t here, ask it on the call. We’ll add it.
Doesn’t my normal waste contractor handle this already?
Almost never for vapes. Most general waste contractors don’t take lithium-battery devices and won’t accept returned vapes in a normal bin lift. Even when they do, the takeback process, customer-facing notice, staff SOP, records and storage are still your responsibility under WEEE and the Waste Batteries Regulations. The collection is one piece; the rest is yours to set up.
I just sell vapes, does WEEE really apply to me?
Yes. Vapes are classified as electrical equipment under WEEE category 7.1 (Schedule 3, SI 2025/910), and any shop that sells them has duties as a WEEE distributor. That includes offering a takeback route for used vapes and giving customers clear information about how to return them. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) and your local Trading Standards can both enforce this.
What happens if I get inspected by OPSS or Trading Standards?
They will typically ask to see your customer-facing takeback notice, your records of returned devices, where you store them, and whether your staff know what to do. The setup pack is designed to give you exactly those documents in a folder you can hand over. We don’t certify you as compliant — but you walk out of an inspection with something to show, instead of nothing.
How is this different from a full compliance review?
A compliance review is broader, longer and produces a formal report. This setup is narrower and faster: it is the productised pack of documents and processes a typical vape retailer actually needs to run a compliant takeback. If your business is more complex — importer, own-brand, multi-product — we will tell you on the qualification call and point you to the right scope.
What’s the collection cost on top?
One flat all-in price per collection, quoted for your shop on the review call and charged only when a bin is full: carrier, hazardous waste consignment note and record-keeping all included, never per kilo. From 12 August 2026 vape producers must fund the real costs of collection and treatment, so market prices are falling, and falling costs feed straight into the flat price we quote. If a producer-funded route reaches your area you get it first.
What does it cost to keep it running after setup?
Nothing, by default. Once you are set up, you only pay the flat all-in price when a bin is collected; there are no monthly fees on the standard service. If you want the ongoing admin fully taken off your hands, optional Compliance Cover is £29 per store per month for Essentials (records maintained, consignment note archive, regulatory alerts, incident line and a quarterly compliance statement) or £49 for Licence-Ready, which adds a renewal-ready licence-evidence pack, virtual staff training refreshers with signed logs and digital waste tracking handling. Annual billing is £299 or £499 per site per year, with banded chain rates capped at £299 a month on Essentials. It is an add-on, never a requirement.
Do I need this if I only sell online?
Yes — arguably more so. Distance sellers have their own WEEE takeback obligations and have to make it easy for customers to return used vapes. Your customer-facing notice, returns process and records all need to work without a physical counter. The setup pack covers the online-only version of all of this.
I Love Vapour: Vape Compliance Run Across All 7 Stores
A vape retail chain needed compliant takeback in every store: bins customers would use, staff who knew the process, and records that would satisfy Trading Standards. Cell Comply set up bins, signage, SOPs and a single collection route across all seven stores, and keeps the estate inspection-ready as the rules change.
15 minutes. We tell you if you’re a fit.
No deck, no sales pitch. We ask a handful of questions about your shop, products and current process, and tell you whether the setup is right for you.
