Five Regulatory Frameworks. One Review.
Most UK businesses handling lithium batteries are subject to multiple overlapping regulations — and most don't know which ones apply to them.
Waste Batteries & Accumulators Regulations
Producer responsibility, Battery Compliance Scheme registration, tonnage reporting.
ADR Transport (Class 9 Dangerous Goods)
UN number classification, packaging requirements, Chapter 1.3 training, DGSA obligations.
WEEE Regulations
Battery/WEEE overlap, Category 15 reclassification, online marketplace obligations.
Environmental Permitting
Storage thresholds, permit exemptions, hazardous waste pre-acceptance procedures.
What the Review Covers
A systematic assessment of your battery waste operations against every applicable UK regulation.
Waste Stream Classification
We identify every battery type you handle — portable, industrial, automotive — and classify each against current UK waste codes and hazardous waste thresholds.
Regulatory Gap Analysis
Cross-referencing your operations against the Waste Batteries Regulations, ADR transport rules, WEEE obligations, Environmental Permitting, and Digital Waste Tracking requirements.
Documentation Review
Reviewing your consignment notes, duty of care records, carrier licences, and waste transfer documentation for completeness and compliance.
Risk Assessment
Evaluating storage conditions, handling procedures, fire risk controls, and emergency response protocols against regulatory requirements and industry best practice.
Battery Types We Review
Our compliance review and setup covers every battery chemistry and form factor — each with different regulatory obligations.
Lithium-Ion (Li-ion)
The most common rechargeable battery in consumer electronics, e-bikes, vapes, and power tools. Subject to ADR, WEEE, and producer responsibility obligations.
Lithium Primary
Non-rechargeable lithium cells (CR2032, AA). Higher fire risk during storage and transport.
Lead-Acid
UPS systems, forklifts, and backup power. Classified as hazardous waste with specific permitting requirements.
EV & HEV Packs
Large-format traction batteries from electric vehicles. Require specialist dismantling and ADR Class 9 transport.
Nickel-Based (NiMH / NiCd)
Older rechargeable chemistry found in legacy equipment. NiCd batteries carry additional hazardous waste obligations.
Do You Need a Compliance Review & Setup?
If any of these apply to your business, an review will tell you exactly where you stand.
You import or manufacture batteries
Producer responsibility obligations may apply. You could need Battery Compliance Scheme registration.
You store batteries on-site
Environmental Permitting and fire safety regulations govern how batteries are stored, segregated, and managed.
You're preparing for Digital Waste Tracking
DWT launches October 2026 for receiving sites. An review identifies what systems and processes you need in place.
You've had an incident or near-miss
Thermal runaway events, fire, or regulatory contact. An review establishes your baseline and maps a path to compliance.
You're unsure what regulations apply
At least five overlapping frameworks govern battery waste in the UK. Most businesses don't know which ones apply to them.

Compliance Review & Setup FAQs
Common questions about the battery compliance review and setup process, pricing, and what to expect.
How long does a battery compliance review and setup take?
Most reviews are completed within 5–10 working days from the initial consultation. The on-site or remote assessment typically takes half a day to a full day depending on the complexity of your operations. You'll receive the full compliance report, gap analysis, and action plan within 5 working days of the assessment.
How much does a compliance review and setup cost?
Review fees typically range from £500 to £2,000 depending on the size and complexity of your operations, the number of sites, and the volume and variety of battery types you handle. We provide a fixed-price quote after the initial consultation so there are no surprises.
What's the difference between a compliance review and setup and a compliance scheme?
A compliance review and setup is a one-off assessment of your current regulatory status — it tells you where you stand and what you need to do. A compliance scheme (like a Battery Compliance Scheme) is an ongoing registration that fulfils specific legal obligations such as producer responsibility for portable batteries. You may need both, and the review will tell you.
Do I need a compliance review and setup if I already have a Battery Compliance Scheme?
A BCS covers only one part of your obligations — producer responsibility for portable batteries. It doesn't cover ADR transport compliance, environmental permitting, storage regulations, fire safety, or the upcoming Digital Waste Tracking requirements. A compliance review and setup assesses all of these frameworks together.
Can you help implement the recommendations from the review?
Yes. Our ongoing compliance support service covers ongoing implementation, from arranging ADR-capable partner collection to registering with compliance schemes, setting up documentation systems, and preparing for Digital Waste Tracking. Many clients move from review to retainer.
What regulations does the review cover?
The review covers the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009, ADR (Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road), WEEE Regulations, Environmental Permitting Regulations, and Digital Waste Tracking requirements. We also assess against relevant health and safety legislation for battery storage and handling.
